E-Signatures for Google Docs and Drive
If your contracts live in Google Drive, the slowest part of getting one signed is getting it out of Drive: download, convert, upload somewhere else, place fields, send. Picking the file straight from Drive removes those steps, and a Google Doc arrives converted to Word with its formatting intact, ready to sign or to become a reusable template.
Download, convert, re-upload, repeat
The common workflow is to export the Google Doc as PDF, find it in downloads, upload it to a signing tool, and place every field by hand — every time, even for the same agreement. Version control suffers too: the PDF that got signed is no longer connected to the Doc that keeps being edited.
What the template covers
Pick from Drive directly
The Google Drive button opens Google's own file picker. Choose a Google Doc, a Word file or a PDF.
Only the file you choose
Access uses Google's drive.file scope: the app can read only the file you pick in the picker, never the rest of your Drive.
Google Docs become fillable templates
A Google Doc is exported to Word with its formatting, then its blanks are detected so you can fill and send it like any template.
Signed with an audit trail
Every signature records identity checks, time, IP and device, and the final PDF is sealed against changes.
A signed Google Doc is a signed contract
The Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act, 15 U.S.C. § 7001, provides that a signature, contract or record may not be denied legal effect solely because it is in electronic form, and every state except New York has adopted the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act; New York reaches the same result through its Electronic Signatures and Records Act. The source of the document — Google Docs, Word or a scanned page — makes no legal difference. What matters is that the parties intended to sign that exact text and that you can show it did not change, which the tamper-evident seal provides.
A marketing agency living in Drive
A small agency in Portland kept its client agreements as Google Docs and spent twenty minutes per new client exporting, uploading and placing fields. Now the account manager picks the agreement from Drive, fills in the client's details with the live preview open, and sends it by email. The signed PDF goes back into a client folder the same afternoon.
Preparing a Google Doc for signature
- Use underscores or [Bracketed Labels] where details change, so fields are detected automatically.
- Keep headings and numbering in Google Docs styles; they convert cleanly to Word.
- Remove comments and suggestions before importing, so they do not appear in the signed copy.
- Store the signed PDF back in a client folder in Drive for your records.
Questions people ask about this
Can I e-sign a Google Doc?
Yes. Pick it from Google Drive; it is converted to Word with its formatting, and you can sign it or send it for signature.
What access does the app get to my Drive?
Only the file you select in Google's picker, through the drive.file permission. It cannot browse the rest of your Drive.
Can I turn a Google Doc into a reusable template?
Yes. Its blanks are detected automatically, and you can mark or drag any field we missed.
Does it work with PDFs in Drive?
Yes. PDFs can be picked from Drive as well.
Does editing the Google Doc later change the signed document?
No. The signed version is a sealed copy. Later edits to the Google Doc do not affect it, which is exactly what you want for a record of agreement.
Can my clients sign from their Google account?
Signers do not need any account. They open the link and sign in the browser, whether or not they use Google.
